Giving to the Libraries
In order to ensure that resources are available to NYU students and faculty, and to keep Bobst Library a secure environment, access to the building is restricted to valid NYUCard holders and to students and faculty at institutions that have special arrangements with NYU. In keeping with this policy, procedures exist to request special access for users who need to use the library as part of an "unofficial" affiliation with NYU (ie, users who are not eligible for an NYUCard).
Giving Opportunities
Gifts to support the Libraries' general acquisitions or for the purchase of materials in a particular subject field are greatly appreciated. Please take a moment to review the following information for different opportunities available to help us build collections, expand electronic information resources, and enhance instructional services. For information on making contributions to the Bobst Library Book Endowment or to establish a restricted endowment, please call Paula Jennings at 212.998.6909. Naming opportunities and planned giving options are also available.
Gift of Reading Fund
With a tax-deductible gift of $100 or more, you can honor someone or commemorate meaningful events in the lives of family members and others while supporting the New York University Libraries.
The Gift of Reading is appropriate for all occasions: holidays, birthdays, retirements, get-well wishes, anniversaries, graduations, and memorial tributes. For each $100 gift, we will place a personalized bookplate in one newly purchased book. The individual honored will receive a letter and a copy of the bookplate in acknowledgement of the donor's thoughtfulness. In appreciation for a gift of $500, we will place personalized bookplates in six newly purchased books.
To make a gift to the Gift of Reading Fund, or for more information, please call Michael Pittman at 212.998.2446.
Friends of Bobst Library
The Friends of Bobst Library program plays a critical role in helping to provide important resources and services for the academic community. In appreciation of their gift, members receive exciting benefits, including reading privileges and on-site access to the Library's special collections and electronic databases; discounts on select books from the NYU Press; and invitations to exhibition preview receptions, book launches and other special events featuring noted authors and public figures.
To join the Friends of Bobst Library, or for more information on membership, please call Michael Pittman at 212.998.2446 or visit the Friends of Bobst webpage.
Donating Books and Materials
The Library welcomes gifts that fall within the scope of its collecting activities. The same criteria that are used for the purchase of new materials are applied when gifts are reviewed. In both cases the decision is based upon the demands, present and anticipated, of the University's teaching and research programs.
Gifts of materials are accepted by the Library with the understanding that once received they are owned by the University. The Library reserves the right to determine their retention, cataloging treatment and other considerations related to their use or disposition. Only the Dean of Libraries or appointed designees may accept books on behalf of the Library.
The Library generally needs:
- Scholarly or rare items with research value that are in good physical condition
- Serious literary works
- Manuscripts, letters, and diaries
The Library is generally not interested in:
- Outdated textbooks
- Popular magazines
- Paperback editions of current popular fiction
